Pastels are Polygenic....one way I know to explain is the pastel trait is like rungs on a ladder...(I hope I spelled that right)...But when you breed a Pastel to a normal or non-pastel...I seriously doubt you would get even 50% pastels....Unless the rungs were present but somehow not being visually expressed. The Pastel trait is built by selective breeding...like putting on layers of paint on a project...through many breedings the animals get refined.
You can breed for colors or no colors...but Pastel just means the reduction in Black melanin expressed....The quality of those animals and ability is another story.
