Substrateless Incubation

I've saw this posted before but can anyone give me the details on how to do it?

In his first year of breeding a friend of mine lost quite a few eggs to mold even though it seemed that his subtrate moisture was about right.

Is mold more or less of a problem when with the substrateless incubation method?
