Hi chaps I've just joined the forum and I'm very keen to learn as much as I can about one of my favourite sujects- namely snakes!I love all wildlife in general and have even been cage diving to see Great Whites but I think snakes just shade them as my favourite animal. Unfortunately I don't get to see any in the wild because I live in an unfavourable part of the UK. I have however done loads of research and have come up with Simmo's top ten most deadly. When coming up with the list I looked at a number of different factors like venom toxicity, aggressiveness and proximity to humans to decide each placing. You'll notice for example that the Fierce snake isn't on there. He may have one of the most potent venoms in the world but is not particulary aggressive and lives in such a remote part of Australia that its unlikely that he will bite many people. What do y'all think?!
10. The Saw Scaled Viper: Small viper but certainly packs a punch. Doesn't like to be stepped on and you're not going to be happy if bitten by him! 9. Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake: Don't get him mad. You won't like Easty when he's mad! 8. Monacled Cobra: The most widespread of the Asian cobras. Very impressive, very deadly! 7. Tiger Snake: The first Aussie on the list. Likes his baby mutton birds for dinner! 6. Fer de Lance: My friend did his para training in Belize and couldn't believe the fearsome reputation this nasty piece of work had! 5. Gabon viper: Longest fangs of any other snake. A really beautiful snake that is very camouflaged under leaves. 4.Eastern Brown: Most dangerous snake Down Under as he regularly sneeks into houses undetected. 3. Puff Adder: This chunky character bites most people in Africa. Deceptively quick if not handled properly. 2. Black Mamba: My personal favourite. A near 100% death rate without antivenom. What a snake! 1. Russell's Viper. Extremely potent venom that is said to bite over a 100, 000 people every year. Widely feared and revered in Asia. Just pips the Black mamba to NO1!
On a lighter note now that's done and dusted, has anyone seen the new film Snakes on a Plane. I don't want to spoil it for anyone that hasn't watched it but it was a farce from start to finish! Spraying the snakes with chemicals to make them ultra aggressive - come on give us a break! No strike and release just a series of frenzied attacks on the passengers (one unfortunate chap has his winkie swallowed taking a leak!). I was surprised to see the milk snake and the rat snake killing people because I didn't think they were venomous but then again I didn't know snakes could have fang transplants either (some elapids seemed to have viper style fold away fangs but I might have been mistaken!)However my personal favourite was when the Reticulated python killed and swallowed a man's head in under twenty seconds!!!
Nonetheless I suppose it was quite entertaining in parts and I did jump up a couple of times but Samuel L. Jacksson should still be ashamed of himself!!! Simmo's top ten most deadly!
