Well since the guessing has started

I had 2. 1st one is a bit silly. I was thinking of the snake somehow holding on to some dark color to help with bright light, much like sports guys put black under their eyes.



2nd was, since it is actually on the outer rim of the pupil, is it possible that we are seeing the inner edge of the pupil. Like if you cut a hole in a basketball. There is a edge to the thickness of the basketball. I was trying to think of a logical reason this edge would be darkened. These gueses may have something to do with that it is 3:40am, and I was watching sports all night.
