does what it wants to and feels comfortable with. To be honest, most people don't use hides with their boas. As long as they are in a cage where they feel secure, and are able to get under the substrate they do fine.

I don't use any hides, and keep my boas on paper towels, a few will occassionally crawl underneath them. I guess you should also consider the type of cage. Mine are all in black Boaphile racks or cages so they have a dark enclosure much like they were in a hide.
