EVENING TELEGRAPH (Coventry, UK) 11 September 06 Fireman release snake from radiator (Barbara Goulden)

Animal-Lover Jennifer Roberts was horrified when her pet snake slithered off her shoulder - and became firmly wedged behind a radiator.

Jennifer and husband Mark tried coaxing, pulling and even oiling the sides of the 9ft-long boa constrictor.

But despite their best efforts, the snake's head had become firmly stuck between the radiator and the wall.

After nearly an hour, the Coventry couple felt they had no alternative but to dial 999 to beg for help from the emergency services.

The telephonist put them through to the fire brigade and within minutes, five firefighters from the Radford Road station were knocking at their door in Regent Street, near the Butts.

Jennifer, aged 31, said: "Fortunately the heating wasn't on but our pet, who has the Welsh name Angharad, was far from happy.

"We'd already tried greasing her sides with vegetable oil to try and pull her out but her head was really wedged and she just couldn't move."

When the firefighters arrived they quickly removed the radiator from the wall and Angharad was freed.

Office worker Mark says the slithery escape artist, who slowly digests a dead rabbit every two weeks, only ever bites in rare circumstances.

The couple rescued Angharad, along with another, smaller constrictor, from a snake rescue internet site.

Grateful Jennifer, who also keeps a bull mastiff, three cats, a rabbit and a giant leaf insect, said: "I can't thank the fire brigade enough.

"I called them at about 10pm on Friday and was really worried about wasting their time.

"In fact, they couldn't have been nicer and were all taking pictures of Angharad with their mobile phones."

The call was so unusual that firefighters left pictures of the snake rescue for their colleagues to see what they had been doing.
