WDTN (Dayton, Ohio) 11 September 06 Big Boa Found Slithering Down The Road (Mandi Sheridan)

Some Trotwood residents got quite a scare when they found a boa constrictor roaming their neighborhood.

The six foot snake was spotted Monday as he tried to cross Free Pike near the connector. A passerby held the snake until police were able to take him into custody.

Officers took the 20 pound boa to the Humane Society to make sure the snake is not in danger or posing a threat to others.

"Sure they could be dangerous, I mean they're a constrictor and they basically squeeze their victims when they have to," cautioned the Humane Society's Sharron Exline.

Exline said the animal appears to be well fed and will be safe at the shelter until it can be taken to a wildlife refuge. "They can check his health there and from what I can see it looks healthy, but we like to let the experts take care of it," she said.

Trotwood police officer Jerry Jackson believes the snake was purposely set free. "Somebody got it as a pet and didn't want it anymore because it got so big and decided to let it go."

They're just happy the big boa was found before someone got injured.

If you or someone you know lost this boa constrictor you can contact the Humane Society at 268-PETS.
