My guess would be that this guy is unexperienced in the killing process. Even though they are natural born killers, it is still a skill that must be practiced. Ever watch a newly hatched snake eat? They miss and sometimes they don't wrap the prey properly. I've rescued two ball pythons that have done the same thing, and after a few months of feeding regular, they were able to grab the mouse with no problem. My jungle carpet x diamond python was only a few months old when we bought him and he was the same way. Chalk it up to inexperience. Good luck.
