In addition to what everyone else has said, read your state laws governing "pets". Most contracts are written with particular laws in mind. When a rental contract states, "no pets are allowed" it is implied to mean no pets allowed per such and such state/city legal's definition of a pet.

For example in VA, when I was renting a couple of years ago, my rental contract explicitly stated no pets allowed. My landlord was kind enough (probably because she knew I was looking to purchase my first house and I was using her company as my buying agent) to explain to me that the line item was written with implied understanding on VA state law's definition on a pet. After reading the law, I found that I was legally able to keep my snakes, tarantulas (nuisance specie), and tropical roaches (all roaches are consider pest) even though this apartment had a "no pet" policy.
