DAILY DISPATCH (East London, S Africa) 03 November 06 Villagers scared by unwelcome visitor (Luyanda Makapela) Villagers near Stutterheim are terrified after a large snake – believed to be a Lesser African rock python – was spotted in a backyard there on Wednesday night. The snake was seen less than 1km away from the Kubusie village where a young boy recently had a close encounter with what experts believe was a python or an escaped exotic snake. Amatholeville resident Jadin Kididon said he saw the snake, which was about five metres long, when he arrived home on Wednesday evening. It was near a chicken coop. “I was walking towards one of the shacks in my backyard when I suddenly saw a big snake, about five metres long,” Kididon told the Daily Dispatch yesterday. The snake disappeared into tall grass in the yard. Kididon said the community called the Stutterheim branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which has appealed to people not to harm the snake but to allow them to hunt for it.
