I feel acrylic paints are okay for a variety of cage applications provided they are applied on a stable substrate like the 3/4" plywood of your cage.



If the species in question scratches a lot then acrylic paints can be a problem. The same holds true if a sand substrate will be used.



I would recommend a cheap piece of linoleum flooring on the bottom and then acrylic paint for the walls. You may have to touch up once in a while near the cage floor but that's easy with acrylic paints.



Acrylic paints vary quite a bit in quality and cost. Sherwin Williams makes an acrylic paint that is supposed to be very good, albeit expensive.
