I wasn't too keen on my boyriends snakes when we moved in together, as a matter of fact I was afraid of them. He was patient enough to teach me about them and answered any questions I had and eventually curiousity got the best of me, and then I spotted a Piebald while he was looking on the message boards and I was hooked. Try taking your wife and/or family to a show. As for the setup for your herps...we have them in one coverted bedroom/den off the living room, tightly sealed, with regulated heat and humidity. It currently houses 36 snakes, 4 of which are over 9 ft. and 2 leopard gecko colonies.
Rack systems seem to be the way to go when space is limited.
Good luck!
