That must've been a cool looking house.
It's not out of the ordinary for reptile keepers to transform a whole room into a large enclosure, sometimes with drains and trees. I don't have any photos for you though. Sometimes it's just a closet, sometimes a large room, sometimes a basement. I wish I had the space to do that!
One downside to owning a home and doing as you suggest is resale... what do you do when you have to sell the home? Having a room that has special reptile features would probably not appeal to your average home-buyer, so unless you plan on being in your house forever, most people have to plan on removing these special features if they decide to move (or have to move for various reasons).
I'm not sure how common those type of drained atriums are in the South (I lived in SC for a few years but have been in Buffalo for almost two decades now), but that would be ideal - nice tile-lined atrium with drains, that if you had to convert back to a non-reptile enclosure, it wouldn't be difficult to do or look weird to homebuyers.  ----- Lauren Madar - OphidiaGems.com
