Newbie w/ ? about snake activity

Hi all. I just got a 1 y/o ball a few weeks ago. So far he appears to be ideal. No feeding problems at all. Just had its first shed, though it was a little patchy. However, he never ever comes out of his hide box on his own. When I handle him he seems calm though. He never even uses his climbing branch. Whats the deal?
