I put the probe in that way just to test how hot the temps would get. You can drill a hole in the back or on the side. I just went and check the temps with my temp gun and from bottom to top there's a 2 degree difference. Also, I tend to hang my probe a few inches above the heat from the side. Oh by the way I will use helix controls with the old style temp drop box. I wish helix still made them. Jeff also put lights in the cages that's why you see quite a few cords.
