Well I have three of mine in the largest plastic wading pool you can usually find at a Walmart or Toysrus.
There isn't any mud, although I've always wondered if I should add some, but there are plenty of leaves, etc., at the bottom.
Mud probably isn't as important if your "pond" isn't going to freeze. I have a livestock water heater in it and the water doesn't freeze.
We did have a hard freeze, winter storm a couple of weeks ago
and part of the water surface did freeze, but only in the areas farthest away from the heater.
