I've been seeing a lot of comments on dog food products/ingredients lately that seem out of the blue and irrelevant... I find it rather amusing that the raw food diet is being thrown in people's faces as an insult... A sort of "I feed my dog raw meat so I'm better than you!" thing when in reality, raw meat can be just as potentionally dangerous as commercial brands. But that's not the purpose of this post.
By "sawdust" I assume you're referring to the listed ingredient of powdered cellulose? It's not literally sawdust, nor as bad as it sounds. Cellulose is found in plants, but animals such as cats, dogs, and humans cannot digest it since we don't have the cellulase enzyme. However, that doesn't mean it's terrible if consumed. It will simply just pass through the digestive system. In fact, if you've ever sampled diet foods, you may have ingested it yourself. Since we can't digest it, it's used in some diet foods (such as Slim-Fast) to act as a "filler." It doesn't harm you, just makes you feel more full so you don't keep eating more and more.
Because this is the ball python forum and there's a seperate dog messageboard for raw food feeders, I'm not looking to start a debate on whether raw is better or not. So please, don't respond with any "This is better because of this and this.." To each his or her own.
I just wanted to offer an interesting tidbit on cellulose as well request that, just maybe, the whole controversial dog food drama not be used to randomly slap people in the face. This is the snake forum, after all!
