Seems like common sense to me. "Look, the snakes are all frantically trying to get away! What on earth could be making these snakes go ballistic?"
My family used to live in LA, near the San Andreas fault. At that time we still owned several macaws, and we always knew when an earthquake was coming because those birds would go NUTS before it happened. The last earthquake I remember while we still had them, they went off screaming and shrieking and woke up the whole house (and neighborhood) about an hour before it hit.

"The problem with America is stupidity. Now, I'm not saying we use capital punishment, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?"
