Depending on growth rate and individual, they can be sexually active at 2 1/2 years old. That is when you might see a hemipenal shed. In water it looks like an X with very wrinkled surfaces. Out of water it's a thin (2 - 3 mm), long (40 - 80 mm) white, slimey thing. Kind of like a small piece of rolled up shedding from a bad shed but slimey like ejaculate.
I think you would only see one if the male was sexually active (excited) from the presence of a female. At least that's the only time I ever see them. ----- Thanks,
