live or fake plants?

I was wondering which is better to keep with your chameleon, live or fake plants? I've kept two veiled chameleons with fake plants without issue for 3 years or so now but a friend recently lost a baby panther because his tounge got stuck to the fake plants in his enclosure. I recently purchased my first panther as well and was wondering if it would be better to keep him with live plants? Would live plants have possibly prevented my friends loss?
