I used to keep/breed jacksons (Xantholopus); seems the females were perpetually gravid.

I'm pretty sure that female jacksons retain sperm. If they've been bred before, it could be that they have no need for a male, hence the blackening and hissing.

Is the male doing the head twitching thing?
