You are also lucky that he doesn't choose to poop over the fountain. Also, you fill the fountain with fresh water often, and depending on what's in the water you are using (treated city water? Bottled spring water?) there won't be a lot of nasties in that. I think I would clean the fountain more often just to be safe. Chams don't like change and once yours has decided to drink out of it you don't really want to upset that. Removing a known source of drinking water is risky...if your cham refuses to switch to another method reliably he could end up with dehydration problems which are harder to deal with.
