Cruised my local area (Lancaster CA) for the first time this year last night, temps in the mid to upper 60s. Total count: 7 AOR, 8 DOR. 3 gophers, one southern pacific, the rest mojave rattlers. Most were babies from last year. One mojave was a little older, and had a heck of a rattle for his size: 10 segments. The southern was the highlight of the trip for us, found just outside of their typical habitat not far from a mojave. They are known to venture down into the desert and even hybridize with mojaves, but this is only the second we have seen in "mojave territory". Normally, we spot them up in the hills in the forest, where no mojaves are to be found.
