ive always used aspen i have all of my snakes on aspen .as long as there 6 monthes old or more. i had to place my probe half the depth of my aspen that is about 2-3 inches thick.i tried paper and i didnt like it. the ink would stain the white cages.

I enjoy watching my snakes actually play in the aspen . they tunnel threw it hide in it .make ruts in it
