Your Boas will thank you for making the switch!

I use about a 2" layer at least. I also measure my temps on the actual bottom of the cage, because the Boas do like to burrow in the Aspen. If the Aspen gets packed down, you could just increase the hot spot temp by a couple of degrees, and everything should be o.k.

The only bummer with Aspen is that the Boas do tend to drag it into the water bowl. That might actually be a good thing though, because the water bowls do get changed more often!
