I use cypress in my vivariums and pine for my tubs in the rack (brb's though). (Breeders) For the people who have to many snakes it is just not simply feasible to take every boa out and transfer them to a feeding tub or play with every snake every week. So using newspaper it is easily visible when soiled, they can eat inside their enclosure without the risk of swallowing substrate I would imagine and it is easily attainable. Of course then they are down sides to newspaper so choose what's best for you and your animals.
