I have a lot of snakes and paper substrate is soo easy to check and clean. If soiled, simply roll up and replace it. I went through a time where I used newspaper only and found many of the same drawbacks. Mainly stained snakes. I since have added a layer of dimpled craft paper on top and for the most part the snakes now don't come in contact with the newspaper. My arger cages use two pieces so if soiled at one end, I only replace that end.
Oh yeah, I get the dimpled craft paper from uline.com in 24" wide rolls and cut it to length. I cut it a bit oversize so it goes up the sides of the cage. All my snakes seem to leave their deposits right along the wall and with the paper liner going up the wall, NO POOP on cage at all!!!! WOOHOO!!
