Feeding live prey

I just got a ball python this week (he might be 3 to 4 months old) and the guy at the store I bought it from said he fed it live and it ate(took that as a good sign of it being healthy). I want to continue feeding it live prey and was wondering if I should hold onto the mouses tail with a pair of tongs or just let him run around and watch the snake do its thing?
