The "bulging" thing doesn't bother me too much, as I have hatched out some real "distorted" looking eggs! But let me ask you this: Do you have air holes in your incubation container? By the way you described it, it sounds as if it maybe suffocated! You need air flow! Even if you got the substrate too wet at the beginning, the proper air flow with correct that! I have mine set up, so I have to "mist" them every other day or so!
