New Hanover is tough because Wilmington and Carolina Beach have grown so much that there isn't much left that is not development. Head a little north into Pender, Onslow, and Craven and you will see a lot more habitat. I have just herped New Hanover a lot because I work there about once a month and love hanging out at the beach there.
Drive through Wilson all the time on 70 but haven't stopped yet. Pick up Palmer and Braswell's book and you will see what snakes have been found there. I do not think it will be as productive as the other counties mentioned above, but can't say for sure because I haven't searched there.
If you are taking 95, you might want to consider going further south and cutting over the NC Sandhills. Some great stuff to be found there...corns, scarlet kings, eastern kings, pines, etc...good stuff. I've been 2x each year the past two years and every trip has been worthwhile.
If you want to email me, I can give you more specifics as to roads, trash piles, etc. I am just not comfortable putting that kind on info online for just anybody to have access to.
Where up north are you talking about?
Michael
