Hi Ryan, Remember to consider that I developed this method with other reptiles not monitors. So yes, I keep our monitors like I kept other reptiles, deep substrate and choice of temps and the ability to create their own shelter(by their design).
I have always raised torts with the ability to burrow. Althought like monitors many species are leaf burrowers. Or shallow leaf litter over dirt.
The Golden Greek babie I recently hatched really like to burrow in leafs.
Heres a pic of a wild local tort nestled in plant cover.

Most people think they borrow in the ground, that is extremely rare around here. Here they mostly shelter in rock shelters and plant cover. Cheers
