Yes, the laws here regarding herps are very strict.

Collecting any reptiles from the wild is prohibited without a proper permit, which isn't easy to get a hold of. In fact, in Australia it is illegal to even touch a wild reptile without permission from the authorities in the relevant state.

Despite these laws, reptile collection (illegal and legal) occurs widely in Australia.
