Paralle;l is where each tape is connected directly to the AC source. whether that be through thermostat or a rheostat.
Series wold be connecting one end of a piece to the AC source and connecting the other piece to the other end of the first piece.
Not good to go series as all the current for the second piece goes through the first. Could be too much for the first and/or there could be a voltage drop causing the second piece to run cooler.
