Our male, Orion, digs in his cage all the time. I have him in a GLASS 40 breeder, with soil, and PLANTS. My children and I have also gone and put earthworms in his cage so he could have little surprises, and they will keep his plants healthy. I agree that with glass, they see out, and WANT out; just like when they see the cords, and try to climb them. Earth is the most natural substrate there is, and there is nothing wrong with having it in their enclosure, as long as it is high quality. I personally recommend SuperSoil Potting Mix. It is like a compost mix, and even helps with getting your environment all the more natural. I have a breeding trio, and in my female cage, even the crickets are breeding. Everyone is happy, and my vet(highly respected) agrees. As for impaction, keep them well hydrated, well fed, and the soil fairly moist, and all should be well. Good Luck!!! And MOST important, LOVE your baby, that is what he is. not just a dumb lizard, right?!?
