enclosure lid question..

I have a 10 gallon with a sliding screen lid.. Is the lid really needed? My gecko is never seen trying to get out or anything. I don't have cats and my kids can't reach into it or reach the set up. I have always thought that the lid was more to keep things out than keep geckos in, is this right??
