I can't really give you an answer but my leo does this too, though maybe not that extreme. However he does know when its feeding time, when I turn off the light, he comes out and stares out the glass and scratches at it sometimes. I think he's just excited and knows he's going to be eating, he is a huge pig. I don't really think reptiles care one way or the other about being handled, so maybe your leo is just a really excited feeder.
