I also think it could be dilated pupils. I have a male with solid black eyes when it's dark, but as soon as you shine the light directly on them the iris shows through. Here's a couple of pics to give you an example:






Shine a flashlight directly into the eye and if it stays solid black you could have something. Best of luck proving it out.
