I’ve truly realized something over the past couple of weeks….really enjoy this whole boa thing! The raising, the collecting, comparing, the studying/learning about…and now the breeding of them.
I got home from work yesterday and was soon on my way out to Home Depot. I decided to check out the snake room before I left. I still had a gravid female that I was waiting for. Everything looked normal in her cage as I was walking up, except that her newly placed hide box was askew. Upon closer inspection, I saw some nicely colored, albeit slime covered, bundles of boas. I had my daughter in the room with me, so I quickly put her to work. (I immediately yelled for her to call 911…she actually started to! LOL). She was a GREAT assistant, and she’s only 8 y/o.
Anyway, this was the first time for mom, and she also did a great job. 17 live, 1 slug, 0 stills/deformed. Everything went perfectly!
Dad is the Ihle Salmon I had for sale a couple of times. Mom is a high orange/red normal. Her sides are washed in a combo of red and orange. My hope was that some of the babies would show a combination of dads hypomelinism and moms natural red colors. It seems that this occurred in some of them.
The clutch can essentially be divided into 3 groups: The hypos, the “almost hypos” (these have more normal coloring toward the front, and hypo-like tails) and the “Pink granite”. These are the really cool looking ones. As they look now, they have mostly normal color: but they have a pervasive yet underlying pink wash throughout. These are the ones that have me dying to see post-shed. I had no idea what to expect with this pairing…and could not be happier.
This brings me back to my original statement: I really enjoy this boa thing!
My breeding season is over for this year: Two gravid females, two healthy clutches and two healthy new moms, plenty of interesting (genetically and visually) babies and a growing passion for all things boa.
Best wishes to all with the rest of the season!
Enjoy the picts!
