P stands for "parental". And it's the P generation, not the Pth generation.

F stands for "filial", which roughly means offspring.

These concepts came out of genetics research on the inheritance of various mutant genes. They are not very useful in general breeding, line breeding, selective breeding, etc. An arrow pedigree is more useful there.
