The amount of color they have isn't as important as the reduction of black. Pastels have an overall reduction in black. Some Pastels have more of a reduction in black than others. Some Pastel have LOTS OF COLOR as well as a reduction of black. Pastel don't have as much reduction as a Hypo, so black in the side medallions doen't mean it's not a Pastel. You need to look at the "entire snake". If you have a strong reduction in black over the entire bod of your snake, but not as much as a hypo, then your boa could very well be a Pastel.
