The sensor portion of the probe is in the first half inch of the probe.

You want this near, but not touching the heat source and if possible, not touching the tub or the shelf. In between the tub and the shelf, near the heat source is ideal.

Every rack is different and you may have to experiment with a temp gun for a while, but this is the gist of what Jeff at Helix has explained to me.
