If you like birds, all the power to you!
Everyone brought up a lot of good points.
For me, I'd never be able to own a bird (especially a larger parrot) because of the time needed to spend with them. I handle each of my snakes about once a week.
Birds, however, must be socialized. Then, after raising a bird, or getting attached to it, you must pay attention to it or it will develop behavior disorders.
I have a friend who has had a blue and gold macaw for years. Beautiful bird, but she hardly ever goes on vacation, and only one or two of her relatives can watch the bird if she does go away, because it is like taking care of a toddler.
Since I'm fairly busy, my snakes are good pets to me! They interact with me (even if they don't "love" me), and I don't have to trim feathers or claws or beaks. I've tried keeping a lot of different pets - ferrets, rabbits, an iguana... and snakes seemed to 'fit' best with my lifestyle.
Though it'd be cool if I could get one of my boas to repeat something I said... ----- Lauren Madar - OphidiaGems.com | CageMakers 1.0 BP, 1.0 Hog Is., 1.1 Hypo BCI, 1.1 Surinam BCC, 0.1 GTP
