Yeah, when some people find out I have snakes, they're horrified. It turns out snakes are the number-one animal people are afraid of---one friend of mine is almost paralyzed by fear of snakes (even though she's never had much experience with them; no traumatic episode in her past)!
I'm a member of the Minnesota Herpetological Society and I'd recommend if you want to connect with other snake (and reptile) lovers in your area to find out if you have a similar organization near you (you probably do). I found out about the MHS when I went to the Minnesota Renaissance Festival.
MHS members always display their animals there and answer people's questions. Now I also volunteer out there every summer; it's really fun to help people learn about snakes and even overcome their fear of the animals---and the Ren Fest is a big fundraiser for our organization. We also do "hands-on" appearances around the Twin Cities in parades, at events, corporate picnics, schools, etc. (We're in high demand.) One of our goals is to help people come to appreciate reptiles and amphibians. ----- Renee
