I was laughing at the overly dramatic way they moved the boas as well. The only thing I can think of that they might have done it that way is because both animals were about to shed (their eyes were cloudy). So when showing Mike Rowe how to do it, they figured they'd do it the 'safe' way, since they might be grumpy, and obviously he was a little nervous (moreso around snakes than alligators?? and on the show prior, he was willing to get bitten by a bloodworm? eeeuuch!).

The retics were handled pretty well given that they are fiestier, and at least the keeper guy did clear up the difference between boa/python bites and venomous bites. And, I have never seen snakes larger than a boa hooked and moved before, that was interesting. Damn, that's a big hook.

I just shook my head over the boas though. Even after they were grabbed, you could tell the boas were pretty calm... just like "oh, hey, time to move? yawwn, ok." And I thought the same thing about the water - come on, drain it and refill it at least! Hopefully they went back and recleaned after the cameras left, it seemed to me like they were trying to get as much done for the cameras as possible, and alligator poo and rattlesnake poo is more exciting than python and boa poo, apparently.

The scariest part of the show was when the cameraman broke a glass cage door... heh. I do love the show in general.
