>>Seriously? 10 mins. Wow. I'd much rather just swing the rats by the tail and knock 'em silly. I hope they dont take that long, that's just an arbitrary number you used.
You would be suprised how long it takes to sufficate. It takes only a minute to fill the chamber, but 5-10 mins isn't unusually for them to sufficate. Believe it or not I've had them come back to life!
CO2 isn't poisonous so there is no danger to the pedetory animal it mearly inhibits the prey to breath Oxygen during the gas chamber period. Carbon Monoxide actually binds to the aveoli of the lugs inhibiting their ability to absorb oxygen. Weather or not ingesting them is a good thing or not is not my call.
I used to knock out the rats but its a slow process to beat 30 rats to death. Not to mention it starts the rigomortis, due to the adrenoline relaeased upon impact. With CO2 gas there is no rigomortise, its limp and tender. I used to feed picky eaters that would take live or F/T fresh killed because they were warm and limp enough to manipulate like a live rat. Its pretty weird using tongs to make a dead limp rat walk like its alive. Plus ther is no blood!
Another factor is after removing the rats from the chamber their about 10 degrees warmer because they were hypervenalating which causes increased blood flow. Makes them perfect for feeding fresh.
