Grats to the author for putting some decent decent info on the animals in the article instead of trying to send people into panic-mode about snakes. I expected another "if it's not cute and furry with big pouty eyes it must be killed and by the way all snakes should be illegal to own" article.

As an aside, from the building I work in we watched a resident of the neighborhood behind us kill a black rat snake with a shovel (it was too fast for me to get all the way down & out by the time we figured out what was happening). I guess he'd rather tolerate the rodents it was eating living around his house. Those are aggressive snakes when cornered, but damn.. you live on the edge of the woods.. walk off and chances are it wont be there when you come back.
