Water Turtle from the River

Our friends went on a float trip this weekend and got a water turtle. They asked if we wanted it and we took it but only to release it. The river they were at is 2 hours away, is it ok to release it in a closer one? Also, it hasn't eaten in at least a day, is it ok to feed it? We don't want to mess up any more of his surroundings as we already have. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. We are pretty sure it is really young.
