I would base your decision on how much time and effort you're willing to put into it. Either animal looks amazing as a display (I have both), but chameleons are considerably more work, and you have to keep a much better eye on them. More food variety is needed with chameleons, as well as proper lighting. Either animal will need a temperature gradient, but chameleons are much more fragile, so you're gonna need to be on top of things more with them than you would for a GTP. Snakes will also give you a little more warning if a health problem is coming up, and are a little easier to fix if a problem does arise (but problems come up more often with chameleons if both are kept in perfect conditions).



Also, chameleons are out and about during the day, and GTP's are out and about at night. I love the fact that you can leave a chondro alone for a week for a vacation and it's as happy when you get home as it was the day you left (with no attention inbetween). Green trees are also typically a little agressive... I've been bit several times by mine (basically like 4 pin-pricks from a thumbtack if they only get you once), and I don't think any of them that I have now would hesitate to do it again if I stuck my bare hand in there.



If money is not an issue, I would get a "Basin Emerald" before a GTP... I don't really like normal emeralds personally, but basin emeralds are amazing in appearance and are pretty mild mannered (I've never been bit by any of my basins).
