Zaandam: The police have issued a warning about young poisonous snakes in Zaandam after 48 poisonous snakes were found in a temporary building on the Parkstraat in the city. Police announced this on Sunday. The police discovered the animals after two small poisonous snakes were found on the Parkstraat earlier.

After the first snakes were found, the police hired in snake experts and contacted the 66-year-old owner of the makeshift building, who was on holiday abroad at the time. At the orders of the public prosecutor the police forced entry into the residence being rented by the artist. Police found poorly sealed terrariums both inside and outside the residence containing a total of 48 poisonous snakes. Nine snakes were dead, another nine were in extremely bad condition.

The police found all the adult snakes that the owner reported should be in the building. "We cannot rule out that a few young poisonous snakes are still slithering around somewhere however," the police said. They are warning the public to be extremely careful if they come across any young snakes and to contact police immediately.

Zaandam: De politie waarschuwt voor jonge gifslangen in Zaandam. Aanleiding is de vondst van 48 gifslangen in een noodgebouw aan de Parkstraat in Zaandam. Dit maakte de politie zondag bekend. De politie ontdekte de dieren, nadat eerder in de Parkstraat twee kleine gifslangen waren aangetroffen.

Na de vondst schakelde de politie slangenexperts in en nam ze contact op met de 66-jarige eigenaar, die op een vakantieadres in het buitenland was. Op last van de officier van justitie betrad de politie de door kunstenaars gehuurde woning. De politie vond zowel in als buiten slecht afgesloten terraria in totaal 48 gifslangen. Negen slangen waren al dood. Negen waren daarnaast in zeer slechte conditie.

De politie vond alle volwassen slangen die volgens de eigenaar in het pand hadden moeten zijn. „We kunnen niet uitsluiten dat enkele jonge gifslangen nog ergens rondkruipen”, aldus de politie. Ze waarschuwt het publiek bij het aantreffen van een jonge gifslang uiterst voorzichtig te zijn en contact op te nemen met de politie.
