I think those flies are carion flies. They are indeed nasty. I had them get into a hatchling batch and they apparently laid eggs at the healing embiblical site on one of the babies and killed it. The flies always seem to appear at about egg incubation time and dissappear later in the fall. I'm sure that they over winter in the sink drains.
